What I Ate in 1996

Inspired by Georges Perec’s ‘Attempt at an Inventory of the Liquid and Solid Foodstuffs Ingurgitated by Me in the Course of the Year Nineteen-Hundred-and-Seventy-Four’ (1976), I kept a record of everything I ate in 1996. I was a cigarette smoker throughout the 1990s (and ’80s and ’00s) except for a couple of years around the birth of each of my children. 1996 was one of those years of non-tobacco intake, which accounts for the quantity of biscuits consumed. It doesn’t account for the amount of meat. If I were to do this again, there would be less sugar and less red meat and more pulses and grains. I’m surprised by the solitary schnitzel. And by the 121 incidences of Guinness.
